Get the most from a Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin

If you have a Zeppelin, we hope that you are already enjoying the fantastic sound that it offers. But as is always the way with hi-fi, if you put a bit of thought into placement the resulting performance will improve. Small things can make a big difference in audio.

For starters, the more solid a platform you can sit your Zeppelin on the better. We’re not saying it has to be on a dedicated hi-fi rack, necessarily, but as solid a base as you can manage is a good idea. It will pay dividends with the sound.

Also, think about space. As is the case with most hi-fi speakers, a little bit of breathing room does wonders for the sound. In the case of Zeppelin the subwoofer and flowport technology perform better with a little bit of space to ‘breath’. But, as always with hi-fi, a little experimentation will allow you to get the best possible sound for your own taste and the room in which you have the system.

Also, while Zeppelin has what can comfortably be described as a ‘room filling sound’, traditional hi-fi values can help when it comes to where you place the Zeppelin for listening. If you want a high-quality stereo image – where all the musicians appear in the areas of the soundstage where the producer intended them to be, then try placing the Zeppelin directly in front of your favourite listening position – this will work especially well if you decide to use you Zeppelin to boost the sound of your television as well as an iPod speaker.

There’s also an optional Zeppelin wall-bracket. This allows you to free up some valuable shelf space, and also makes it easy to position your Zeppelin below a wall-mounted flatscreen television.

Further adjustments can also be made by using the menu system that pops up on your iPod screen when attached to Zeppelin. A new menu option called ‘speakers’ appears, and from here you can adjust the bass output of Zeppelin to suit your taste. Try it, and see what works for you.

And if you have any more Zeppelin set up tips, please feel free to post them here via a comment, so that others can learn from your experiences.

Do you do a conversion kit as I am struggling to find a black adaptor that supports audio and video (I did but an adaptor wehich also plugged into the headphone socket if my iPhone 6 but it will no longer work – saying the item isn’t supported). Thanks.

I recently have seen that Bowers & Wilkins speakers are being used in Volvo cars on the dash – what a neat idea. The notion that it joins up in discussion of is an App and in discussion of that topic then that the quality of speaker is what really counts kind of above the musical sounds that are what you might call singularities in sound. They receive sound or rather the quality of sound that yes would improve driving – a very neat notion and, indeed, the right direction to be pointed to-ward.

So, my device is stuck at the solid white light. Setting this up is not trivial and I’m a good network engineer. In any case, I’m not sure which door to knock on in order to figure out what’s going on. Does it take 20 mins or 20 hours for a firmware update. This is a disaster. I spent so much money on this. Hopefully someone here can provide guidance on this one. Is there a customer service that I can talk to?

    Please help/advise….

We are having trouble connecting the iphone6s via the apple adaptor, as it is not being recognized. Thank you, Matt.

  • Neil says:

I have the new Zeppelin Wireless. Really happy with it, apart from it dropping AirPlay a couple of times needing a reboot. In this original article it mentions being able to adjust the bass whe connected on the iPod. Does this have to be a lightning connector? I am connecting using Bluetooth / aux / AirPlay. I would love to know if the menu item allowing you to increase the bass is available to me on my iPod. I know you can change the EQ through the music settings to bass booster, but that just muffles the sound.
    Any advice welcome, thanks.

I want to upgrade my Zeppelin to the latest lightning connector and/or Wifi possibility.
Do you have an upgrade kit for that?

Sorry to hear this, please complete our contact us form,7/ so that a member of our customer service team can advise you on your firmware issue directly.

  • Bowers & Wilkins says:

    Hi Neil,

The Zeppelin Wireless doesn’t feature any tone control ability. If you wish to adjust the sound, for example the bass levels you will need to use the EQ settings on the streaming device (iPod etc.)

  • Bowers & Wilkins says:

    Hi Frank,

Unfortunately it is not possible to upgrade the Zeppelin to work with Apple’s AirPlay technology, as the speakers hardware is not capable of supporting wireless streaming. As well as this, we do not manufacture an adaptor that will enable this functionality.

We can however confirm that it is possible to connect the Zeppelin up to an Apple Airport Express in order to stream audio wirelessly via AirPlay to your speaker.
To do this, you will require a 3.5mm to 3.5mm headphone jack cable to connect the Airport Express to your speaker via the Aux socket located at the rear.

  • Per Krogh says:

I have a 1st generation zeppelin bought in 2009. I have tried to hook up an Argon BT2 Bluetooth adapter via the optical port and into the mini jack on the Zeppelin, no sound what so ever. Since the D/A converter in the Zeppelin is superior the Argon’s, this is my preferred option. Optical connection via Airport Express or Apple TV works fine. The Argon is sampling at 24bit/192 kHz, which receiving unit must support. Can not find what the optical port on the Zeppelin supports, I presume this is the problem or what ?

  • Bowers & Wilkins says:

The Zeppelin was never designed to be used with Bluetooth streaming and therefore may not be compatible with Bluetooth dongles.

I am dissapointed to hear a buzzing noise and a red light flashing instead of the blue light. My zeppelin is more than two years old so I guess that the repair can be too costly. I thought that this Hi Fi would be my final one but I will need to buy a new one. I know only one thing: I will never buy something manufactured by B&W. It is not reliable because I made a very light use of the system with sporadic auditions per month not even per week. Expensive products can be worse than cheap products because I bought a more protable system from other manufactured costing me three times less than the Zeppelin and it is still working.

Kind of 6 years since i bought my zeppelin, and now i´m having the static noise problem. So my ipod doesn´t charge, nor my wifes and when i plug it in, this annoying sounds appears. I´ve read that this is a common problem with the zeppelin family. And since i´m out of warranty i´ll have to pay to repair something that it was not for bad use, added to the fact that im living in Chile, and here is kind of an oddisey to find a place to repair this kind of devices.

Could anyone give me a solution to this issue?

  • Bowers & Wilkins says:

The Z2 can be connected to devices such as older iPod’s via the AUX input on the back. Simply connect the iPod to the Z2 using a standard 3.5mm stereo cable via the headphone output socket on the iPod.

I have zeppelin air with 30 pin connector. As I no longer own any 30 pin iOS devices, I am unable to change bass level. I don’t want to buy dock lightning adapter because I exclusively use airplay option.

It would be very kind to create firmware update enabling bass level adjustment through control app. I am sure many existing owners have the same issue. Or at least some would like to adjust bass remotely from listening position.

  • Bowers & Wilkins says:

Unfortunately we are unable to enable tone control functionality via the Control App.

It is only possible to adjust the bass levels by docking a compatible Apple device.

  • Beto says:

Hello; i have the zeppelin wirless, i read that the zeppelins converts everything to 24/192 but when i check in the midi/audio application from my mac while streamlng to the zeppelin it just says 16/41 why is that? Is the zeppellin really doing the upsampling to 24/192? Its says 16/41 using ariolay and also bluetooth. I hace another bluetooth speakers thar shows other sampling rates like 24/96 etc.
    Thabk you.
