P7 technical paper – everything is designed to allow you to lose yourself in music.

With P7, everything is designed to allow you to lose yourself in music.

Total-sound-immersionTotal sound immersion

Thanks to the technological improvements we’ve made for the P7 headphones, sound performance is a revelation. Bass is deep and tight, vocals are clearly defined, and there’s a wonderful sense of space, balance and clarity across the whole frequency range.

At the same time, the over-ear design and snugly fitting ear pads ensure P7 envelops you in sound. Because when you’re hearing sound this good, you don’t want anything to interrupt your enjoyment of it.

Drive unit design

Drive units with precise, controlled movement reproduce sound of the highest quality. With most headphones, sound quality is a direct result of the way the drive units are designed, and the diaphragm usually performs the dual role of sound generator and suspension system. With P7 our engineering expertise has allowed us to create a new kind of headphone driver, that works more like the drive unit in a hi-fi speaker, with a diaphragm focussed purely on the job it’s supposed to do: generate sound. Which means a drive unit with a more precise, controlled movement – and a giant leap forward in sound quality.

Dual cavity ear pads

Dual cavity ear pads ensure great sound for all ear shapes and sizes.

P7’s ear pads feature a dual cavity cushion design. This maintains a consistent volume of air between the drive unit and the surface of the ear at both sides of the head. Coupled with ear-pads that mould to the contours of the wearer’s head, the result is enhanced stereo imaging and optimised sound for every listener.

Resistive speaker basket

Resistive speaker baskets precisely control airflow so the headphones produce natural sound.

The internal speaker baskets encasing the P7’s drive units are perforated with air vents covered with a resistive mesh. This unique design allows for precise control of sound radiation from back of the drive unit, resulting in a more uniform, piston-like movement.

Braced speaker baffle

The braced speaker baffle eliminates unwanted vibrations so the headphones produce clean sound without distortion.

P7’s speaker baffle plates are constructed from a polymer material that has been heavily braced and tuned to make it very rigid and inert. This limits any resonances that might colour the sound of the headphones.

Light voice coil

Light voice coil so the speakers can move freely and produce detailed treble.

P7’s voice coil is constructed from a copper-clad aluminium wire. This low-weight voice coil means that the drive unit can move freely, for extended high frequency dynamics

Damping material

Damping material eliminates unwanted internal reflections allowing the headphones to produce clean sound without distortion.

Damping material inside the speaker enclosure helps control and dampen unwanted internal reflections, reducing colouration and distortion. Bowers & Wilkins engineers have conducted exhaustive tests working with different combinations of damping materials, to ensure the best possible performance with P7.

Hi I am interested in setting up a headphone system for my spare room.
I have read about the benefits of a dedicated headphone amp and understand the headphone output on entry level integrated amps is pretty basic. However, if I was to spend £600 would I get better sound quality from a headphone amp or integrated amp. Could you recommend models in this price range to match with the P7.
    Thanks very much

  • Matt Anssari says:

    Hi Richard,

Thank you for your enquiry regarding headphone amplifiers.

I am afraid that headphone amplifiers are not something we’ve ever got heavily involved with and we’re pretty much out of touch with what’s available.

As you can appreciate the Bowers and Wilkins’ range of headphones have primarily been developed for use as mobile headphones to complement the Apple iPod series of products.

A recommendation is to consider browsing the various Internet forums as to what other users have enjoyed, alternatively checking out some reviews on headphone amplifiers around the price range you intend to spend should result in selecting a very reasonable product. Of course, the higher the cost, the greater the performance.

    Kind regards,

    Matt Anssari

With the Dual Cavity ear-pads, is the second cavity in the ear-pad base plate and vented by all the little holes?

What material is the driver cone?

Measured these headphones and the treble response is spectacular…very fast and nicely damped.

    Very nice headphones, great job!

    @richard evans

This may come a little late, but anyway… just in case you are still searching for headphone amps, here are my two cents.

I own a pair of P5’s, which I plug into a little yet quite impressive (at least, for my taste and ears) USB DAC and headphone amp made by NuForce (uDAC-2, 24bit/96kHz USB Digital Audio Converter; check the webpage, they have a uDAC-3 nowadays).

I have my music collection on a MacBook Pro, ripped either directly in WAV or FLAC (using ‘abcde’ from the command line, or ‘Max’ or ‘XLD’) and the P5’s plus the uDAC have turned it into a portable Hi-Fi system that is hard to beat.

BTW, the said USB DAC has also worked for me on a Dell XPS laptop running Linux Mint-Mate Debian-Edition (I *think* I also successfully tried it once on Windows 7). FYI, I use Songbird on Mac, or Nightingale on Linux (and Windows) as the music player/organizer.

Hi, I have a question regarding use. How suitable are these for use in a gym? How well do they cope with sweat?
    Thank you!
