Rough Trade recommends: Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings

It is that Christmas time of year again, and there is nothing we like more than a great seasonal album, and it helps if has just the right amount of cheese added.

Sharon Jones is probably the best current soul singer around right now, and she is backed here with the amazingly groovy Dap-kings (who played on Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black). This is a perfect mixture of old favourites ( check out Silver Bells) and new written future classics. “It’s a Holiday Soul Party” shows that new life can be breathed into songs which have been covered to saturation point.

Many R&B singers have ventured successfully into the Christmas tradition from Irma Thomas, James Brown to the Jacksons. This new album by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings sees them stand proudly in this lineage and in doing so capture the true essence of the season.
