Get the most from a Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin

If you have a Zeppelin, we hope that you are already enjoying the fantastic sound that it offers. But as is always the way with hi-fi, if you put a bit of thought into placement the resulting performance will improve. Small things can make a big difference in audio.
For starters, the more solid a platform you can sit your Zeppelin on the better. We’re not saying it has to be on a dedicated hi-fi rack, necessarily, but as solid a base as you can manage is a good idea. It will pay dividends with the sound.
Also, think about space. As is the case with most hi-fi speakers, a little bit of breathing room does wonders for the sound. In the case of Zeppelin the subwoofer and flowport technology perform better with a little bit of space to ‘breath’. But, as always with hi-fi, a little experimentation will allow you to get the best possible sound for your own taste and the room in which you have the system.
Also, while Zeppelin has what can comfortably be described as a ‘room filling sound’, traditional hi-fi values can help when it comes to where you place the Zeppelin for listening. If you want a high-quality stereo image – where all the musicians appear in the areas of the soundstage where the producer intended them to be, then try placing the Zeppelin directly in front of your favourite listening position – this will work especially well if you decide to use you Zeppelin to boost the sound of your television as well as an iPod speaker.
There’s also an optional Zeppelin wall-bracket. This allows you to free up some valuable shelf space, and also makes it easy to position your Zeppelin below a wall-mounted flatscreen television.
Further adjustments can also be made by using the menu system that pops up on your iPod screen when attached to Zeppelin. A new menu option called ‘speakers’ appears, and from here you can adjust the bass output of Zeppelin to suit your taste. Try it, and see what works for you.
And if you have any more Zeppelin set up tips, please feel free to post them here via a comment, so that others can learn from your experiences.

I purchased the wall Bracket because I felt. the speaker, needed to hang in space as a real work of art
Again the bracket is a good solid design. The Zeppelin is a joy to hear and now the sound seems magical, I no longer take my Ipod touch out and about because I can see they were made for each other. I use my old classic on my daily commute to work ect. The zeppelin is one of the best hfi hardware i have ever come to purchase. I have told friends to save up and get one and stop pissing about with silly speakers.
joy joy.

Lovin’ my Zep too. Got it on hard wood desk with a nice gap from wall behind, kept the bass on 0 and it sounds great.
Chris on my iPhone the speaker setting is in the general settings menu and as yet I’ve had no recognition problems with my iPhone 3G and the Zep. I have an iPhone 3G (not 3G S) and I’m using 3.1 but had a recent update download from Apple. Hope this helps with speaker setting for you and your connection rights itself.

Chris,
I had the same issue with the bass speaker setting not appearing on my iPhone 3G or my iPod Touch 2G when I first got my Zeppelin two weeks ago. I don’t know if this is a fix, but I tried rebooting my iPod by powering it off, then back on while it was plugged into the powered on Zeppelin. The setting then appeared. This worked for my iPhone as well.
I’ve got the Zeppelin on a very solid piece of furniture about six inches away from a wall. I go back and forth on the bass setting between 0 and -1. Outstanding sound! I could not be more pleased with it.

I just bought a Zeppelin. After hearing Ipods through many setups (even the new Bose dock 10) I have never heard one that sounded as good as the B & W Zeppelin. A very warm, detail sound through out the spectrum. If you are looking for the state of art sound for your Ipod here it is my friends.

I am trying to get my Zeppelin to play other music sources, using its various cable connections… nothing seems to connect, I’ve tried with my older MP3 player using it’s line-out cable, I’ve tried with connecting to my Sony Vaio computer – USB cable and headphone jack, and I get nothing. The only player it seems to recognize is my i-pod, which is fine, but I have so much more music elsewhere. How do I get my zeppelin to play from other sources?

I got my Zeppelin about 3 weeks ago and has it hooked up with a power conditioner. I do think I get better audio quality with this setup – the music has real good dimension, bass is clear not boomy, and I’m hearing details that I couldn’t hear before. For what I’m getting it’s well worth the price.

Hi Steve,
This is covered in the Zeppelin Connectivity guide.
The airport express out should be connected to Zeppelin AUX input
Zeppelin has both analogue and optical digital input( combined socket) Zeppelin mini only has analogue aux in.
I hope this helps,

My advice for iPod users, set the QE on “more hights” here in germany “mehr Höhen”.
My experience is that this preset delievers the best results.
“Jazz & Rock” are also ok, but delievers sometimes too much bass or even accurate bass.
For placing the zeppelin, a position not too close to a wall (min. 20 cm) is recommended.
If you do not use the rubber stand, use a knee hight stand for best results.
With the rubber stand, the usual sideboard hight seems to be ok.

Regarding the Airport Express, be sure you activated and connected the Device in iTunes, set the volume in iTunes to maximum and use the right jack at the zeppelin.
My experience is when using the “headphone” jack, that the zeppelin delievers a more decent and less louder sound. Using the zeppelin with my TV for watching movies and music videos from my iPod is ok, but also here the volume is not as loud as is could be. But this seems to be related with the video source, because on my macbook the videos are also not too loud.

We purchased our Zeppelin two years ago and LOVE IT! However, last month it started making a buzzing (distorted electrical type sound) when the iPod is docked. It is most noticeable between tracks. It does not make this sound when iPod is connected via aux. cord. We are hoping this isn’t an expensive repair. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to correct this? Looks like a couple of others are experiencing this same problem.

Just bought a Zeppelin and am just now enjoying some excellent SoS music through my iPhone docked into the fantastic Zep.
If I may suggest an added feature would be a new iPhone/iPod Touch B&W branded app to stream music from any networked NAS (UPnP/DLNA) or PC using a good interface, like the native “iPod” app. I have bought the Plugplayer app from the AppStore but it’s cumbersome to use and quite unstable.

Hi folks, Got the Bose sounddock series 2 for christmas, but have to say nice sound at low volume but when turned up there is no bass and the whole sound is very tight and one speaker sounding if that makes sence. Also the remote is rubbish and my ipod touch wobbies in the cradle which feels like it’s about to fall off. So it’s going back under the 30 day trail. I have just went out and got the Zep and it is SOOOO much better and sweeter sounding with a wonderful bass and crisp treble also it’s alot louder and stays clean and clear all the way up to max volume. The remote is great and the volume goes up and down with the ipod. The ipod sits in the cradle so much better and you can hold it as if it isn’t attached to the Zep. I am so glad i tried this baby out before keeping the Bose, which now sounds pants conpaired to the Zep. Awesome sound. And it looks so cool.

Hi Makhdoom,
When a Zeppelin ( or any other speaker) is placed on a light support the energy from the speaker will vibrate both the speaker itself on the support leading to unwanted colouration.
When a speaker is placed on a solid suport like a marble floor only the driveunit will vibrate, which as a result gives a cleaner and more punchy sound.
I hope this helps.
Best,

My only problem is that the sub will struggle with deep bass in certain tracks, no matter what the volume is at unless the EQ is set to flat, but having the EQ set on flat looses the point of having a nice speaker.
Anybody got any thoughts/ideas?
Also, can the speaker covers be removed or not? I never dare force it incase I damage them.

I was told it could take three weeks before i would get it back but within a week it was fixed and back with me, working as good as ever. Krestian says:
Hi Phil,
Using the zeppelin as a TV speaker will improve the TV sound a lot and you can connect the TV to the zeppelin in two ways, either using the analogue or optical digital output from the TV.
If using the optical digital output, which would give the best sound quality, make sure the digital output is set to stereo PCM. The Zeppelin can not decode 5.1 signals.
In both cases, analogue or digital, it is the same input socket on the zeppelin which is a 3.5mm jack input.
If your TV is wall mounted we do have a wall bracket available for the zeppelin which you can ask your retailer about.
The Zeppelin comes with a 25 page instruction booklet, you can download one from this page if you need to: http://www.bowers-wilkins.co.uk/display.aspx?infid=2466&terid=4381
You will find full details on the remote functionality on p.16.
Many thanks for the feedback and I hope I’ve helped.

Hi there, hoping you can help….
I bought my Zeppelin a couple of weeks back, and I’m very happy with it. However it seems to have difficulties switching between ipod play, and aux (I connect it to my mac for spotify using a 3.5mm cable).
The aux button on the remote often doesn’t work (even though it does turn the light on the unit green). Sometimes the only way to get it to work is by turning it off at the plug and then back on again. Whenever I do this the sound always come through fine.
Any ideas how I can rectify this problem?

Peter says:
Hi Krestian,
It’s a standard analogue cable.
The situation has got worse I’m afraid, in that on occasion the speaker simply stops playing music through the cable halfway through songs (the green light stays on, and the music is definitely still playing!).
The only way to rectify the problem is by turning the speaker system off at the plug socket and turning it back on again. Then the sound is restored (without any playing with the cable – the cable itself is brand new). This is the only way I’ve been able to get aux sound back to the system.
Would updating the firmware help or should I return the system to the shop I bought it?
Thanks
Peter

Hi Peter,
Please try an optical digital cable (the Mac output is a combined analogue/digital as the Zeppelin input).
If this doesn’t work there may be a fault with the product and you will need to return it to your dealer or retailer who should repair it under warranty.

I’ve noticed a problem that may relate to the ios4 version of the operating system. This happens on iphone 3g, iphone 3gs and iphone 4 versions. Theissue is the speaker bass level setting is not remembered. If you go into the setting screen and change the setting, leave the screen, and go back in again, your change has not been set according to the display. The display always reads Bass +1.

Update for anyone interested in an issue with the ‘Speakers’ menu on iPhone4: seems this is a known issue and, actually, the Zeppelin *does* set the bass at the level you select – just the iPhone4 doesn’t display it correctly. Over to you, Apple..

Thanks Ivan,
This is indeed correct. You can adjust the bass level through the speakers menu and to be sure you have correctly adjusted the setting you can repeat the precedure but the desired setting will not be displayed on your iPhone 4.
We have informed Apple of this.
Kind regards,
Susanna

How can I adjust the angle of the Zeppelin? (someone previously asked this question and got no answer). Its on a high heavy cupboard and I cannot see the nano display. I have to stand on a stool to see it (fell off the stool last week and broke my arm) so I need a better solution. Old threads on the internet mention an adjustable rubber stand. I bought this 2 weeks boxed ago from an official supplier and it came with nothing adjustable. I can go lo-tech and stick something under it at the back but I am afraid I will mess up the acoustics…

Hi can anyone suggest a good cable for connecting my macbook to the Zeppelin so I can use that as the source player as I have more music on that than on my ipod.
I have had the Zeppelin for about six months now, & I adore it. Thanks B&W!

I get rather fed up when a product develops a fault when out of warrantee, the usual response from the manufacturer is “sorry it’s out of warrantee, we can’t help” or even worse the use a third party service agent who really just wants to make a profit out of the problem.
I’m now in a state of shock, our Zep has got to be 2 years old or so although in immaculate condition. I plugged my new iPhone 4 into it and on the screen a flashing message appeared “not compatible for charging”. I unplugged the iphone and a strange humming noise and red light flashed constantly. When I plugged my iPod Classic back in, nothing.
The reason for my state of shock is, I phoned B&W spoke to Mel and not a problem they’re sending packaging out and looking into it for me free of charge, no drama’s, nothing, I don’t know what to say apart from what a cracking product the Zep is and the aftercare is cracking too!
Thank you B&W.

Does my Zeppelin need to be sat on a granite accoustic plinth to aid sound production or is it ok sat on a heavy oak sideboard?

Firstly, I love my zeppelin! By far the best sounding peice of dedicated ipod/iphone audio equipmant on the market. However, I have recently brought a Samsung LED tv and want connect it to the zeppelin through the tv’s digital optical connection. On the B&W web site, it says that the zeppelin has an optical input. Where is it? Can anyone please help me?? Thanks, James.

Jmaes says:
Aisling. In the box for your zeppelin there should be a thinner box with accesories written on it. In there should be n additional rubber stand pad that alters the angle in the direction i think you will need. If this isn’t in the box you should go back to the place you brought and ask where it is. Hope this helps.

Langerz iPhone 4 on Zepp says:
There does seem to be a small problem with iPhone 4, after docking on the Zepp, I go to the bass or speakers tab in settings, after setting the bass to what I require it doesn’t retain that setting if I come out of the’ speakers’ tab….I’ve updated the zepp software through my Vaio and USB cable using the downloadable B & W programmer but the problem hasn’t gone away….. Any suggestions or will there be another B & W update soon to alleviate this iPhone 4 glitch?……BTW it’s the best purchase I’ve made in a long time, it gets used every single day, it also plays all of my iphone movies and YouTube videos (superbly) to the TV through the s-video output on the back, and I’ve connected my Vaio up to the Aux input for fantastic sound from all my Vaio media.

Hi,
this is an in issue with iOS rather than the Zeppelin so unfortunately it’s not something we can fix with a software updated. We can assure you that although the setting change isn’t displayed, it is in effect.
I’m sorry for any inconvenience and I’m glad you’re enjoying your Zeppelin.
Kind regards,
Susanna

Hi, the Apple presentation of the new iPod line shows a depiction of a Zeppelin with no iPod on it playing music through the new Airplay feature. Airplay requires Wifi and the Zep has none. Is this an Apple exageration, is a new Zep with Wifi coming or … er… what?!? An Airplay capable Wifi dongle would be just fine, particularly with a Toslink output. Hang on, isn’t that an AirPort Express already??!? Confused…
